Over the past few months, I have been trying to find things in my life that I can improve and am making strides in my life to improve my weaknesses. Because of this, I have been thinking a lot about people I know and associate with and how they make me feel when I am around them. I have compiled a short list of the traits that I most admire in people.
1. Integrity- I was googled the word integrity and found one of those plagiarism websites that had an article called “The Value of Integrity.” Ironic. Call me a cynic, but I think this trait is especially rare. It seems that people are only out to make quick money ( Madoff), risk their personal and family lives by putting themselves out in front of millions for 15 minutes (Kate) or doing something without thinking of the consequences (Tiger).
2. Tolerance- When someone is tolerant, I feel comfortable and special being around them. I am more likely to be myself and not be judged for who I am. Everyone in the world is different and unique. We all have crazy quirks that others can’t understand. These differences are what makes the world go round. Having the ability to accept people for who they are and not try to mold them to be the way we want them to be is important in every aspect of our life, happiness and our relationships.
3. Genuineness- Being genuine is something I think a lot of people are not, but it is so easy to see through. I can immediately tell when someone is being real, honest and authentic with me. Sometimes being genuine means hearing and giving feedback that may not always be popular, it means having the strength to tell people the way it is, not being afraid to stand up for what you believe in. It means loving people for who they are…really are…all the way down there…and not for what they seem to be on their outer shell.
4. Humility- When I see someone who is super-talented, drop-dead gorgeous, or has the IQ of Einstein. I take a closer look at them. I look to see if they come across as if they know it all the time. Do they act like they are better than other because they have been blessed in ways that many people have not? People who are humble make me want to be a better person. If you are great at something though, you don’t have to pretend like you aren’t….just don’t rub it in all the time.
5. Sensitivity- We are so focused on what is important to us, that we sometimes forget those around us (see #6). People who are sensitive are thoughtful, loving, it makes me fee understood and respected. Sensitive people are honest, but are aware of what they are saying and how it may affect others.
6. Selflessness- In the dog-eat-dog world that we live in, this quality seems to be one that is hard to come by. There are many ways that people can be selfless…in the time they give, their ability to listen, their patience levels and the love that they give. People who are selfless have a way of making people feel special, appreciated and most importantly, loved. These are people that you want to be around. I have found that Selfishness has the exact opposite effect.
Boy oh Boy! This list could go on and on. But alas, the work day is over and it is time for me to go home, enjoy the beautiful weather, and look forward to seeing my sister tonight!
